Tulsi Vivah is celebrated on the Dwadesi after Diwali. It is the occasion of Tulsi's wedding with Shaligramam(Vishnu). Thulsi is also known as Hari priya or Vishnu Priya. Women perform this puja for the longevity of their Husbands life and welfare of the family.the place of worship is cleaned and decorated with angoli, flowers ,dhoop and lamp is lit.new Tulsi is planted in a pot and taken into the house thereby inviting Tulsi home. The rest of the Puja items are placed in front of the plant. Tulsi is decorated with a sari and jewellery. Managalsutra or Yellow thread is tied. Brahman is invited home to do the puja . A new vessel filled with Kheer is given as dhan to the Brahman along with dakshina. Relations and Neighbors are invited for the puja and given kumkum. The story read on this day goes as follows:
In the ancient days there was a demon in the name of Jaalandhar. His wife's name was Vrindha who was known for her pathivratha. because of her devotion towards him,he became powerful and was ruling the world. She was also a devotee of Lord Vishnu. jallander was creating obstacle to rishi's muni's in their tapasya , homom or vruth. When the atrocities became untolerable they went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu decided to test vrunda pathi vratha. Jaalandhar attacked Dev Lok and fought with Indira. Lord Vishnu threw a dead body like Jaaldhar into the palace. Vrindha miss took it as her husband and embraced the body and started crying. By the touch of another man she lost her pathi Vratha and Jaaldhar was killed in the fight with Indira. When Vrindha came to know the truth she cursed Lord Vishnu saying " I worshipped you with full devotion but you deceived me so you will become a stone(Shaligramam). You separated my Husband from me, to experience pain of separation from your wife you will take birth in Mrithyulok." Lord Vishnu made Vrindha into a tulsi plant . (As a result of the curse Lord Vishnu took Rama avtar was separated from Sita matha). Whenever we worship Shaligramam tulsi leaf is offered. Tulsi plant is considered to be amrit. Tulsi is full of medicinal value. Tulsi plant purifies the air around. Snakes will not come near thulsi plant. Taking a tulsi leaf in the morning will help us remain healthy.
