kalidasa - a genius - abhijnana shakuntalam

kalidasa, a literary genius of our country ,is a man known for his simplicity and  beauty.

kalidasa  was the worshipper of  goddess kali. ,his name kali-dasa . he use to spend his time taking the cows to  graze in the jungle, where there was a kali temple. the temple still exists in ujjain.  kalidasa would   clean the temple and watch the cows grazing , have food , take rest and bring  the cows back  home. he was grown up without much formal  education.

the king's daughter princess vidyottama , was a beautiful  learned lady , who was very proud of her knowledge . she said she will marry the one  who defeats her in shassthartha.(debate).anyone who gets  defeated will  their  head shaved , face blackened and kicked out of the  country on a donkey .

one day  pundits saw kalidasa cutting the branch of a tree on which he was sitting .they thought kalidasa is a dump fool shepard .  To  teach princess a lesson local people dressed kalidasa nicely and took him to the palace with a condition that he should not open his mouth.they told the princess that he would do mute debate.

princess showed one finger, he thought she is going to take away one eye, so he showed two fingers, meaning he can take away both the  eyes.princess thought he is talking about dwaitha siddhantha -shakti and shiva. then she showed the palm with five fingers, he thought she is going to slap, so he showed the fist, meaning he will knock her. but princess understood as panch tatva  makes the body.  princess liked  him and marriage took place.

later when  princess  came to know that he is an  illiterate she was ashamed of his ignorance and   insulted him and drove him out of the palace and said he should  not  return untill he is  fully literate .not knowing what to do  kalidasa went to jungle caught hold of kali's feet and pleaded to be blessed with   knowledge or he will cut his tongue in front of her.. she told kalidasa to wait as she will  circumambulate the town. (nagaravalam).  kalidasa disagreed  and locked her inside the temple. convinced  kali ,  told him to put   the tongue through the key hole. kalidasa happily did that and she  wrote on his tongue with a nail  thus kalidasa was  blessed  with wit and  wisdom.

kalidasa , immediately composed and recited  shayamala dhandakam on goddess saraswathi . he returned home and his wife asked him , if he  can  read and write now. then he wrote three   mahakavyas.
